It’s a Mermaid Celebration!

Slover Library is joining forces with MacArthur Center to celebrate 20 years of Norfolk’s unique Mermaids! We are calling all Mermaid and Merman fans to dress up in their best “mer” attire to participate in the Mermaid Parade. Yes, YOU will be the parade! Additional events include crafts, performances by the Itty Bitty Ballerinas and 5678 Shine Dancers, a costume contest, face painting & a fun selfie station! Please register for ONE (1) of the three waves on Eventbrite by September 8th. Everyone who pre-registers will receive a wrist band for participation in the parade.

What are the age requirements to enter the parade?

We encourage the whole family to walk in the parade together! Children ages 6 & younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Costume Contest is reserved for children ages 17 & younger.

How do I enter the Costume Contest?

All registered participants in costume ages 17 & younger are automatically entered in the Costume Contest. Pick up a starfish at check-in to show you are a contestant. During your parade wave, you’ll walk by the Judges’ Table where you can show them your costume.

Each of 3 waves will have 2 winners, one Merman and one Mermaid, for a total of 6 possible winners.

Can adults participate in the Costume Contest?

We would like to reserve the contest to the registered children, though we encourage everyone to dress up in their best “Mer” attire.

Do I have to come in costume for the event?

Mermaid and merman costumes are highly encouraged, but not required for every participant attending. Only costumed participants are eligible for the Costume Contest.

Can I bring someone that I did not invite/register to watch the Mermaid Costume Parade?

Yes; however, due to limited supplies, registration is required to receive a wrist band and be eligible to participate in the Costume Contest.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking is available at the South Parking Deck of MacArthur Center, as well as city parking garages, or on-street metered parking. You can also take the TIDE to the MacArthur Station stop. For additional information, visit www.shopmacarthur.com/directions.
