City Recognized by HUD for Continuing Critical Services

Last May, Newport News received a $30 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI) program. Funding will transform the Marshall-Ridley area in the city’s Southeast Community, creating new housing options, community services, recreational opportunities and parks. 

While the coronavirus pandemic has caused many programs to slow operations, the city and community services organizations have continued to provide essential services in this area and beyond. Staff from the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority are also continuing to work on the housing portion of the CNI process.

HUD was so impressed with the way our city has adapted services and continued our plans, they asked us to participate in a #MidAtlanticMeetup to share details. Mayor McKinley Price joined representatives from the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority and Hampton Roads Community Action Program (HRCAP) to discuss how we’ve modified programs and created innovative partnerships to connect people with resources.
