Free Activities, Giveaway Items, Food Trucks and More for Independence Day Resident Appreciation Event ends July 3
The city is helping residents get a jump start on their Independence Day with a resident appreciation event until Saturday, July 3! Residents can receive a free outdoor activity bag that includes an American flag, picnic blanket, bubble wand, softball, flying disc, LED ring, patriotic yard sign and a list of exciting things to do in the parks. One giveaway bag and one yard sign will be available per family, while supplies last. Bags can be picked up at the following locations:
- Doris Miller Community Center until 6 p.m. on Friday, July 2 and 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday, July 3;
- Brittingham-Midtown Community Center until 8 p.m. Friday, July 2 and 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Saturday, July 3;
- Denbigh Community Center until 8 p.m. Friday, July 2 and 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday, July 3;
- The Newport News Visitor Center at NN Park until 5 p.m. on Friday, July 2 and 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Saturday, July 3; and
- Parks, Recreation & Tourism Office until 5 p.m. Friday, July 2
On Sunday, July 4th, start the day with a special message in the sky. From 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 pm, a Happy July 4th celebratory banner will fly over the city. Afterward, residents and visitors can visit Newport News Park, Riverview Farm Park, Fort Fun at Huntington Park or King-Lincoln Park to enjoy their own family picnics or purchase prepared treats from food trucks from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

- Free admission to Lee Hall Mansion
- Free admission to Endview Plantation
- Free use of the Newport News Park Disc Golf Course
- Free launching of private watercraft at Harwood’s Mill
- Free launching of private watercraft at Lee Hall Reservoir
- Free shoreline fishing at Newport News Park – Virginia freshwater license required
- Free shoreline fishing at Harwood’s Mill Reservoir – Virginia freshwater license required
