Busting Unconscious Bias
The Newport News Hospitality Association and the Newport News Tourism Office, along with the Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau, and Hampton Roads Workforce Council, are hosting FREE customer service training on unconscious bias. The training is being held on Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Denbigh Community Center, 15198 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, and there are two sessions available – 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. These interactive training sessions will highlight:
- Defining unconscious bias and give examples of these concepts in action
- Describing how implicit biases are formed and the ways in which they impact customer service
- Examining our own biases and their effects on others and us
- Learning ways to combat unconscious bias
Unconscious bias, or implicit bias, exists when we unconsciously hold attitudes toward others or associate stereotypes with them. For example, we often harbor negative stereotypes about others without consciously realizing that we do so. Research suggests that changing or eliminating unconscious biases requires time, intention, and training.
