Hampton Resilience Project Impacts Traffic Along North Armistead
The City of Hampton will implement the first phase of traffic changes associated with the North Armistead Avenue Road Raising Project beginning Tuesday, August 25.
As part of the traffic switch, the speed limit on North Armistead Avenue will be reduced to 35 mph between LaSalle Avenue and Convention Center Boulevard. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with the inside lanes closed to allow construction activities.
Lane closures will begin at approximately 9 a.m. on Tuesday, starting with the eastbound lanes before moving to the westbound lanes. This initial traffic configuration is expected to remain in place for approximately two months, weather permitting.
The North Armistead Avenue Road Raising Project is expected to take approximately two years to complete. Traffic patterns and lane closures will shift periodically as construction progresses through different phases of the project. At least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction throughout construction.
Motorists should expect changing traffic patterns, reduced speeds and potential delays within the project area. Drivers are encouraged to use caution, remain alert for construction workers and equipment, and follow all posted signs and traffic-control measures.
The North Armistead Avenue Road Raising Project is a major resilience and transportation improvement designed to reduce roadway flooding and improve reliable access along this important corridor. The project will raise portions of North Armistead Avenue, improve stormwater management, and provide new pedestrian and bicycle facilities to improve community connectivity.
Additional traffic updates will be provided as the project advances and construction activities shift to subsequent phases.
