Hampton Roads Educators’ Credit Union Awards $5,500 to Scholarship Winners

HAMPTON, VIRGINIA – Hampton Roads Educators’ Credit Union announced the
2018 scholarship winners during 64th Annual Meeting on March 15, 2018.

Toni Newby received the Naomi J Chadwick Memorial Scholarship. Newby is
graduating from Surry High School and plans to attend Campbell University
with a major in biotechnology and a minor in studio art. Her long-term
goal is to pursue a career in pediatric surgery. This scholarship was
created for outstanding high school graduates in memory of Naomi J
Chadwick. Chadwick was a member of the Board of Directors from 1997 until
her passing in 2015. This is the third year the scholarship was awarded.

Breigh Campbell was awarded the Laura W. Twyford Memorial Scholarship.
Campbell is a senior at Smithfield High School who will attend Anderson
University in the fall. She plans to study for a Masters in Mathematics
and will teach at a private or lower income high school. The Laura W.
Twyford Memorial Scholarship has been awarded since 1991. Twyford was an
important part of the Credit Union movement, serving on the Board of
Directors for both the Virginia Credit Union League, and CUNA
International. Ms. Twyford was passionate about education, and made it her
life’s work. The Laura W Twyford Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a high
school senior who is planning to pursue a degree and career in education.

Since 2007, HRECU has been awarding the Career Development Scholarship to
high school seniors who plan to pursue a degree, license or certification
in any field other than education. This year 2 recipients will each
receive $1,000.

The first recipient is Shannon Hepp, a student at Kecoughtan High School
and New Horizons Governor’s School for Science & Technology. Hepp is
ranked first in her class and will graduate as Valedictorian. She plans to
attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and wishes to pursue a
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum with the goal
of a career in conservation and sustainability.

The second recipient is Alexandra Luchtenberg of Bethel High School. She
plans to attend Georgetown University in the Fall with a focus on becoming
a United States Foreign Service Officer. Luchtenberg is the Salutatorian
of her class.

Every year the Post Graduate Studies Scholarship is awarded to a teacher
or school employee within our field of membership who is pursuing a
Master’s degree or higher. Karla Young, this year’s recipient, is the
Principal of Aberdeen Elementary School and has been with Hampton City
Schools for 23 years. Young, is seeking her PhD in Educational Leadership
from Old Dominion University.
