Hampton Wins Award for Advancing Economic Equity and Inclusion
AThe City of Hampton Department of Economic Development has been awarded a Bronze Excellence in Economic Development Award from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) in the Economic Equity & Inclusion category for the work at Hampton’s Department of Economic Empowerment and Family Resilience.
The IEDC Excellence in Economic Development Awards recognize the world’s most innovative and impactful economic development programs. Hampton’s Bronze Award honors the Department of Economic Empowerment and Family Resilience’s commitment to expanding economic opportunity by supporting and creating pathways to success for historically underserved communities.
A key component of the award-winning effort was the transformation of the former Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind campus into a catalyst for economic opportunity. Through strategic redevelopment planning and community-focused investment, the site is being reimagined as a destination that creates opportunities for entrepreneurship, workforce development and long-term economic growth while honoring its historic legacy.
“This recognition reflects Hampton’s commitment to ensuring that economic development creates opportunities for everyone,” Mayor Jimmy Gray said. ”Inclusive economic growth is essential for the success of every community.”
The Department of Economic Empowerment and Family Resilience was established to enhance economic mobility for Hampton residents, particularly those facing poverty or struggling despite being employed, often referred to as A.L.I.C.E. (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed).
