Mayor’s Youth Commission Honors Black History Month
By: City of Newport News
| Young people are doing incredible things in Newport News! The Newport News Mayor’s Youth Commission is a group of high school students chosen to represent their peers. These students work and consult with Mayor McKinley Price on projects that have the potential to improve the lives of young people of all ages in the city. They learn about the city, community resources, select projects they want to develop, and complete volunteer work. They also speak with their peers about the work they are doing and encourage others to be a part of the positive changes taking place in the community. To honor Black History Month, the Mayor’s Youth Commission worked together to create a video that highlights Black history makers, artists, and others who made a difference in our nation and world. They researched the honorees, wrote the script, taped their readings, and put the information together in a presentation. During Tuesday night’s City Council Meeting, Mayor Price thanked the members of the Mayor’s Youth Commission for the time they spent creating such a well thought out piece, as well as their creativity and dedication to the project.
