Miniatures and Small Works by Tidewater Artists Returns to The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center

On view December 10, 2016 – January 22, 2017

Hampton, VA – (November 18, 2016) – Hampton Arts’ The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center opens Miniatures and Small Works by Tidewater Artists on December 10, 2016.  In organizing this exhibition, over 250 artists living in Hampton Roads were invited to create miniature or small artworks in any media.

The only requirement given to artists was size. Miniature two-dimensional works were required to be no larger than 20 square inches; 4 by 5 inches for example. Miniature three-dimensional works must fit within a 4.5” cube. Small two-dimensional works were required to be no larger than 80 square inches: 8 by 10 inches for example. Of the invited artists, over 150 accepted the challenge and submitted one, two, or three pieces. The resulting two-dimensional and three-dimensional works comprise a total of more than 350 artworks.

Media represented include drawing, painting in oil and acrylic, watercolor, pastel, printmaking, photography, sculpture, jewelry, quilting, fiber, ceramics, and glass. As would be expected there is a wide range of styles, techniques, content, imagery and intent. Some of the works utilize the traditional miniature techniques focusing on very precise, painstakingly detailed realism, while others employ a bold, expressive style usually associated with much larger work. Historically, miniatures represented larger objects at a proportion of one sixth of their actual size, for instance a portrait painted using a much smaller scale than was typical, but some of these artists elected to actually paint a small object at a slightly larger scale.

Unlike other exhibitions at The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center, for this show only, gallery visitors who purchase artworks may take them at the time of purchase, just in time for holiday giving.                                                                                                                                                                                          James Warwick Jones, Gallery Manager at The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center, served as Curator for the exhibition and he invited Cece Wheeler, photographer and Chair of the Art Department at Thomas Nelson Community College, to serve as an independent judge and select the awards for both miniature and small work categories. Awards in both categories will be $125 First Place, $75 Second Place, $50 Third Place and Five Awards of Merit.

The exhibition opens to the public on Tuesday, December 13, 2016.
