Newport News City Council Meeting Recap

NOTE: Due to the coronavirus pandemic, yesterday’s City Council meeting was held electronically in accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.CNU Lease of Marina for Sailing ProgramLast night City Council authorized the City Manager to execute a lease with Christopher Newport University (CNU) for the continued use of a portion of the Menchville Marina for its instructional sailing program. For a number of years the city has leased an almost three acre parcel at Menchville Marina to CNU for this program, and the current lease expires June 30, 2020. The term of the new lease is a one-year period, with four successive one-year options to renew at the discretion of the City Manager.
Appropriation of Asset Forfeiture FundsCity Council appropriated $20,203 in asset forfeiture funds to the Sheriff’s Office to use for law enforcement operations and investigations. The funds are being used to purchase specialized protective equipment for use in the city jail. Asset Forfeiture Funds are monies transferred to the Sheriff’s Office as a result of Newport News deputies participating in state and federal criminal cases where the defendant’s assets are seized. Citizen CommentsThe Citizen Comment portion of the agenda has been temporarily suspended; however, citizens are encouraged to submit comments to City Council through any of the following methods.
