Newport News Sheriff Gabe Morgan Hosts Day of Service Food Drive Jan. 16

By: City of Newport News

To honor the community service legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Newport News Sheriff Gabe Morgan will host the 2023 Day of Service Food Drive on Monday, Jan. 16. Former Newport News Mayor McKinley L. Price began the event seven years ago to provide nourishment and hope to neighbors in need. Since then, it has provided critical support to the Foodbank during a time when the shelves are typically empty after the holidays.

On Jan. 16, all are invited to drop off non-perishable food and financial donations at the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank at 2401 Aluminum Avenue in Hampton from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. To donate in advance, you can bring items to the following locations:

  • Newport News City Hall (2400 Washington Avenue)
  • City Offices at Fountain Plaza Two in City Center (700 Town Center Drive)
  • Newport News Tourism Office (702 Town Center Drive)
  • Newport News Visitor Center (13560 Jefferson Avenue at Newport News Park)
  • Denbigh Community Center (15198 Warwick Boulevard)
  • Brittingham-Midtown Community Center (570 McLawhorne Drive)
  • Courthouse Way Community Center (14302 Old Courthouse Way)
  • Riverview Gymnastic Center (125 City Farm Road)

The Foodbank uses an online system, You Give Goods, to offer donors the opportunity to purchase food items online. An additional 5% of the retail value of your purchase is gifted back to Virginia Peninsula Foodbank if purchased on YouGiveGoods. Visit the website to select items and donate.

You can also make a monetary donation on Jan. 16 or in advance. A donation of $25 provides 75 meals to those in need. Visit the Foodbank’s donation page to learn more and donate today.

Established in 1986, the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank has been the leading hunger relief organization across the greater Peninsula, serving one in eight Virginians who experience the daily hardships of food and nutrition insecurity. Food banks provide healthy food to individuals, children, families, seniors, and veterans who otherwise might go without it. To learn more, visit hrfoodbank.org.
