Norfolk’s Munson Park Receives State-wide Recognition

NORFOLK, VA – Munson Park, located in Park Place, received an award for the Best New Renovation/Addition for Parks, Playgrounds, Greenways and Trails for a city population greater than 200,000, at the 64th Annual Virginia Recreation and Park Society Conference, held this week in Tysons Corner. More than 500 delegates from across the state gathered for educational workshops, exhibits and to honor individuals and departments that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation. Judges chose winners from among 115 applications across 14 categories.

“The Munson Park refresh relied heavily on input from children in the surrounding neighborhood,” said Darrell Crittendon, Director of Recreation, Parks and Open Space. “Their feedback was incorporated in the playground design, theme and artwork on the basketball backboards.”

Christina Fisher, Landscape Architect III, was the project lead for the park development. “She did a tremendous job taking the community’s input and turning the children’s thoughts and ideas into a tangible, creative and innovative park project,” said Crittendon.

The park of just more than one acre includes walking paths, a ropes-based playground, a cozy cocoon design and an accessible swing seat for inclusive play. The refresh also brought new benches, a repaved basketball court with new backboards and poles, and more. For more information, visit Norfolk.gov/play
