Redskins And Inova Blood Donor Services To Host Blood Drive

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins and Inova Blood Donor Services will host a blood drive on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Inova Blood Donor Services Sterling Virginia Donation Center located at 45745 Nokes Boulevard, Suite #160, Sterling, Va. 20166.

All presenting donors will receive a 2016 Redskins game day ticket and a limited edition Redskins T-shirt. Each presenting donor will also have the opportunity to meet Redskins Alumni and will have the chance to win autographed merchandise and other additional prizes.

More than 250 units of blood and blood products are needed every day, year-round, for patients in area hospitals. Inova Blood Donor Services supplies 24 hospitals in Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. metro area with lifesaving blood and blood products, including military facilities. One blood donation can save up to three lives and there is a continual need for all blood types. There is no substitute for human blood. It only comes from volunteer blood donors. It is used to help trauma patients, surgery patients, newborn babies, cancer patients and transplant patients.

To give blood, donors must be feeling generally well on the day of their donation, be at least 16 years old (with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood in the past eight weeks (56 days) for whole blood or 112 days for double red cells. Photo ID is required. Allow one hour for blood donations. Allow 90 to 120 minutes for platelet or plasma donation. Platelet donors should not take aspirin or aspirin-based products within 48 hours prior to donation.

Aspects of each potential donor’s health history are discussed as part of the donation process before any blood is collected. Each donor receives a brief examination during which temperature, blood pressure and hemoglobin (iron level) are measured.
