Safety in the Streets Day Held Today at Safety Town Today members of the Portsmouth City Council, Portsmouth Police Department, Portsmouth Fire and Emergency Services Department, Portsmouth Sheriff's Office, and Portsmouth Public Schools joined together with the community to participate in Safety Town's annual Safety in the Streets Day. During Safety in the Streets Day, volunteers who donate their time throughout the year were recognized as well as those who sponsor or donate to Safety Town. Safety Town volunteers teach children in the community all about bicycle safety and how to properly cross the street. Safety Town, which is operated by the Portsmouth Police Department, is a miniature city in which realistic pedestrian traffic conditions are explained in the classroom and practiced on the streets. The main objective of Safety Town is to develop pupil awareness of safety practices in order to help reduce pedestrian and bicycle accidents.
