Sister Cities Eyes Emerald Isle

By: City of Newport News

Sister Cities of Newport News (SCNN) has identified Carrigaline, County Cork, Ireland, as its newest prospective Sister City, thanks to a shared history of Irish settlers who helped establish Newport News. Learn more of the back story in South Cork’s newspaper The Carrigdhoun.
Carrigaline has established a “Twinning Committee” which, like Sister Cities, manages its international partnerships. Over the past year, the two organizations have explored connections between both citizens and government officials, and identified areas where an official “Sister City” partnership could be beneficial, including cultural programs (music, art, etc.), youth programs, and business exchanges. Carrigaline and SCNN are working with Newport News City Council to finalize the agreement.
