Small groups make big impact during rescheduled Great American Cleanup
Hundreds of volunteers across Hampton Roads teamed up to clean up their communities as part of the Hampton Roads Great American Cleanup on September 18 and 19. Organized by askHRgreen. org and in partnership with Keep Virginia Beautiful, the annual community improvement initiative was rescheduled from March when the emergence of COVID-19 forced everything to a halt.
The reimagined Great American Cleanup relied heavily on the dedication of individual volunteers in Hampton Roads and they did not disappoint! Over 700 volunteers stepped up to participate in their own socially-distanced cleanup or beautification projects with small groups of friends, family members or coworkers. Projects ranged from well-coordinated workplace service days to the simple act of grabbing a trash bag to collect litter during a family walk. In the end, over 15,000 pounds of litter were removed from city streets, rural routes, neighborhood parks and shorelines as part of the cleanup effort.
Thank you, Hampton Roads, for making the reimagined Great American Cleanup event a success! Save the date and join us for the 2021 Great American Cleanup scheduled for March 27 and 28, 2021 and visit the Team Up 2 Clean Up page for more information on organizing your own community cleanup any time of year.
