Suffolk Volunteers Invited to Join the 2026 Nansemond River Cleanup

SUFFOLK, VA. Keep Suffolk Beautiful invites residents, families, and community groups to participate in the Nansemond River Cleanup on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 9 a.m. to noon at Constant’s Wharf Park & Marina, 100 E. Constance Road. The cleanup is part of the annual International Coastal Cleanup, organized by the Ocean Conservancy.

The event focuses on removing litter and debris from both the land and water along the Nansemond River. Volunteers will be assigned to locations along the shoreline, while those with kayaks or canoes are encouraged to assist with cleanup efforts on the water. For volunteers who do not have their own watercraft but wish to participate on the water, a kayak rental kiosk will be available on-site. Rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

All necessary cleanup supplies will be provided, including litter grabbers, reflective vests, gloves, and trash bags. Registration will take place on-site the morning of the event. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy footwear, and bring a reusable water bottle.

Keep Suffolk Beautiful also encourages local businesses to support the effort by keeping their properties free of litter and debris. Simple actions such as securely closing dumpster lids and preventing waste containers from overflowing can help keep trash from entering storm drains and ultimately reaching the river.
