Newport News, VA, May 31, 2019 – Since its inception in 2008, the annual ZOOM IN on Newport News photo contest has been open only to adults. This year’s contest, however, will be a little different. The 2019 competition will be open to adolescents, ages 12 to 17. The winner in the youth category will receive a $250 grand prize. Additionally, Newport News Tourism will be eliminating the “professional” and “non-professional” categories to simply award one grand prize of $500 to an adult winner. This year’s theme is “People and Pets.” Photos must show one or more people, one or more pets, or a combination of both people and pets enjoying Newport News. The person or people featured in the photos can be silhouettes, but if the photograph includes a recognizable face, then the model release section of the entry form must be completed.
Please keep in mind that the submitted images will be featured in Newport News Tourism publications and on the city’s tourism website, therefore the photographs must be taken in places that are easily recognizable as “Newport News,” not in privately owned homes, yards, or businesses. We also ask that contestants not submit “selfies,” as these will not be eligible for the contest. A panel of judges will choose the winners.
Participants may submit up to five photographs, digital or film. Photographs taken prior to June 1, 2019, which is the start of the contest, are eligible to be entered; however, the images must show people, pets, or both people and pets. All other images, including “selfies,” will be eliminated from the competition. An honorable mention prize of two VIP Passports for four people to enjoy the attractions in Newport News, valued at more than $200, will be awarded to the runners-up in each category. Entries will be accepted June 1 through October 31, 2019.
