Virginia Beach Set To Suspend Friday Waste Management Collections; Sand Distribution Taking Place at Virginia Beach Sportsplex Announced

The Virginia Beach Waste Management Division is suspending all trash, recycling, bulky item, and yard debris collections for Friday, Sept. 6. Friday’s collections will instead be on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Residents are encouraged to remove all materials from curb and roadways that could impede the flow of water to storm drains and secure all loose items. Collections will resume after the storm, and when roads are safe for travel.

Due to the anticipated strong winds, the West Neck and Oceana Recycling Drop-off Centers will be closed on Friday.

The Virginia Beach Landfill and Resource Recovery Center will close at 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 5, to prepare for the storm and will remain closed Friday. The Landfill will reopen as weather conditions allow. Residents can call (757) 385-1980 for Landfill closure information.

If you have any questions you may call (757) 385-4650, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or visit www.vbgov.com/wastemgt.

Sand Distribution

Virginia Beach Public Works will staff the sand distribution site near the Sportsplex, 2044 Landstown Centre Way, this evening, Wednesday, Sept. 4, until 7:45 p.m. Public Works will have sand available, along with a limited number of shovels and bags. Staffed operations will resume at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5. The end time on Thursday will be determined based on weather conditions and availability of materials. Residents are strongly encouraged to bring their own shovel and bags/containers, and will be allowed to fill bags for personal use only — no truck or bulk pick-up.
