Weather Update: Coastal Flood Warning Issued for Norfolk

The City of Norfolk continues to monitor coastal tidal flooding conditions and coordinate response efforts across the City. Crews are actively preparing for and responding to impacts, including roadway flooding, drainage issues, waste collection and transportation impacts.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed, use caution and take steps to prepare for changing conditions.

Public Works:

  • Waste Management will implement a modified collection schedule on Thursday, Sept. 24. Granby Street collection will begin at 10 a.m., covering Willow Wood Drive to Little Creek Road. Any inaccessible areas during regular collection will be serviced on Saturday, Sept. 26.
  • Residents are asked to leave collection containers at the curb until they are serviced. Please report missed collections using the MyNorfolk app, online at www.mynorfolk.org or by calling Norfolk Cares at (757) 664-6510.
  • Beach collections have been suspended until conditions improve. Beach roadside access points will remain accessible and will be serviced daily, as conditions allow.
  • Norfolk’s Storm Water crews are continuing to clear storm drains and flooding stoppages. All Storm Water pump stations are fully operational.
  • Flood gates: Nauticus Swing Gate, Brooke Street Gate, Chesterfield Heights Gates, Sedgwick Street Gate and the gate at NSU have been closed. The Main Gate, Town Point Park and World Trade Center Gates will close Wednesday, Sept. 23 beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Parking:

  • Residents can move their vehicles to higher ground using the York Street Garage.
  • The City’s Parking Strategy for Flood Events was also implemented yesterday, allowing residents to utilize designated City-owned parking lots and garages for short-term parking. A map of locations is available at www.norfolk.gov/FloodParking.
  • ODU’s Constant Center 43rd Street Garage (1067 W 43rd Street) is available. Vehicles will need to be moved by midnight Friday, Sept. 25, to avoid towing due to Saturday’s football game.
