2020: Through a New Lens

Recap of the 2020 State of the City

This year, our city, state and world began looking at health, safety and well-being through a new lens. Our social interactions look much different and phrases like mask up, social distancing and flatten the curve are part of our daily conversations and a way of life for us now. During the 2020 State of the City, Councilwoman Sharon Scott discussed the city’s commitment to ensuring that residents and guests remain safe and receive the best possible care.  As part of the Commonwealth’s Health Equity Program, we distributed thousands of cloth masks, hand sanitizers and health information during drive-thru events. The city has worked hard to educate residents about the coronavirus and give them the personal protective equipment they need to stay safe. Councilwoman Scott recognized the healthcare workers on the front lines treating the sick. She said, “Our hospitals and their staff members are incredible! Thanks to Bon Secours, Riverside Regional Medical Center and Sentara Careplex for the caring, dedicated work you have done for our residents.” As the number of COVID cases increases, it’s important that everyone remain vigilant. Wear a mask, practice social distancing, avoid large gatherings and wash your hands. When it comes to public safety, Newport News is moving in the right direction. City wide, crime is down 12% for the year. This is due in large part to the Newport News Police Department’s (NNPD) focus on community policing and building relationships with those they serve.  To address domestic violence, a growing issue in many communities, the NNPD formed a domestic violence team. This group is instrumental in bridging the gap between law enforcement and victim support.  Councilwoman Scott also thanked the nonprofit community for responding to the needs of Newport News residents with creativity, compassion, grace and determination. For information on Peninsula nonprofits, how you can access services and ways to contribute, visit the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula website .  At the end of her speech, Councilwoman Scott recognized the employees, healthcare workers, first responders and others who are working tirelessly to uplift, protect and empower residents. Our collective efforts are creating a vibrant city of opportunity for all.     The City of Newport News hosted the 2020 State of the City on October 29 with the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. During the event, Mayor McKinley Price and members of the Newport News City Council shared information and stories of how the city is bringing its strategic priorities to life.
