Additional surplus Waterworks property sold
City Council approved the sale of an additional 11 parcels of city-owned land in King William, Hanover, and Caroline counties that had originally been purchased for the development of a reservoir in King William County by Newport News Waterworks. That project was discontinued in 2009, and the land has been deemed surplus. The 11 parcels total over 687 acres and include lots in Hanover and Caroline counties that were to serve as wetlands mitigation sites for the project. The parcels were sold to five different buyers through a competitive bid process with a total sales price of $2,844,233.
U.S. Economic Development Administration grant for seafood park
An appropriation of $840,994 was approved by City Council last night for improvements to the Seafood Industrial Park (SIP). The appropriation includes $640,994 in grant funds from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and a $200,000 local grant match. The grant funding and local match will be used to support preliminary studies and design supporting development of a seafood market, dredging, and dock improvements at the northernmost area of the SIP. As part of the Choice Neighborhood Initiative project, a seafood market at the head of the SIP was identified as one of the Critical Community Improvements. The vision for the facility is a neighborhood amenity and attraction that takes advantage of the existing seafood-related business in the Seafood Industrial Park and expands access to fresh food, while supporting food entrepreneurship.
