Enjoy a Summer of Fun and Exploration at Brooks Crossing Innovation Lab

iLab offering scholarships for NNPS students to attend camp at Old Dominion University
Summer is a time of new experiences. Thanks to the Brooks Crossing Innovation Lab (iLab), young people in Newport News will have the opportunity to learn new skills and utilize cutting-edge technology, all while having fun! Free and open to all, summer classes at the iLab will be held in person at 550 30th Street, Suite 101 and one session will be held virtually. The line-up features:
- VIRTUAL: Introduction to Programming (virtual for ages 12-17): June 20 – 24 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Students will learn the history of computer science and various programming language and will write a computer program.
- Music Makers (ages 12-17): June 21 – 27 from 9 a.m. to noon. Students will receive a hands‐on studio experience with the same software and hardware used by industry recording studios.
- SNAP Coding/Programming (ages 11-17): June 27-July 1 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Learn to code using the drag‐and‐drop block‐based programming language, SNAP. Participants will also create a timed game, generate a virtual flower garden, and more in this fun‐filled camp for beginners and experienced programmers alike.
- Sewing Workshop (ages 16 and older): July 9 from noon until 2 p.m. Explore the marvelous world of fashion and sewing.
- Introduction to AutoCAD (ages 16 and older): July 11 – August 8 (Mondays and Wednesdays) from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Students will learn basic two‐dimensional computer aided drafting (CAD) with AutoCAD, the software used by most architects, engineers, surveyors, and others in construction and manufacturing fields.
- Social Entrepreneurship (ages 6-10): July 18 – 25 from noon until 12:45 p.m. Young people will learn valuable entrepreneurial skills and how to put their talents to work making a difference in the world.
- Audio Engineering, Beat Making, and DJ’ing (ages 13-17): July 25 – 29 from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Learn about music theory, song structure, and basic mixing/blending through hands-on work with mixing hardware and software programs.
- Sewing/Wearable Technology (ages 13-17): July 25 – 29 from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. In this age of wearable technology, young designers will explore the marvelous world of fashion and sewing.
- Digital Arts (ages 12-17): August 1 – 5 from 9 a.m. until noon. This camp is for those interested in building their art skills using the latest technologies. Students will use Corel Draw, Ultimaker 3D printer, Gravity Sketch VR, and other art hardware/software, which will be featured in an art exhibit.
- Story Game Coding (ages 11-17): August 15 – 19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will design and code their own visual story game using custom programming language.
Class sizes are limited, so be sure to register early at www.brookscrossingilab.com. The iLab is also offering three $365 scholarships for Newport News Public School students (ages 6-8) to attend Old Dominion University’s Big Blue Summer Camp from July 11 – 15. The theme of the week’s camp is “Cooking and Baking,” and culinary professionals will teach rising pastry chefs how to prepare a number of delectable desserts and snacks. Students will learn easy to make desserts with minimal electric tools and messes, which will make it easy for them to whip up yummy desserts at home. Lessons will also be offered on healthy choices and portioning, and participants will bring home desserts. The iLab scholarship covers the full cost of the camp. Parents will need to arrange transportation to and from the iLab (550 30th Street, Suite 101) by 8 a.m. and pick-up at 5 p.m. To apply for the scholarhip, parents/guardians should send their child’s first and last name, date of birth, gender, and all their contact information (parent/guardian name, phone number and email address) to brookscrossing@odu.edu.
