Full Overnight Closures on Denbigh Boulevard Overpass Bridge Starting Tonight

Signed detour via Bland Boulevard

To ensure motorist safety during bridgework related to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Denbigh Boulevard Bridge Replacement Project, Denbigh Boulevard will be closed to traffic nightly between Pocahontas Drive and Millwood Drive.Starting tonight and estimated to continue July 8-9 and 11, a signed detour will be in place from 9 p.m. each night until 5 a.m., and until 7 a.m on July 12, directing motorists traveling along Warwick Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue to use Bland Boulevard as an alternate route. All work is weather dependent.

In addition to the full overnight closures on Denbigh Boulevard, motorists can also expect multi-lane closures with brief, intermittent stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes each on Interstate 64 in both directions near the Denbigh Boulevard overpass bridge, July 6-9 and 11-12, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., and until 7 a.m. on July 12.

During the closures, contractor crews will be setting two to three bridge girders each night for the new eastbound span of the Denbigh Boulevard overpass over Interstate 64 in Newport News.

In this phase of the Denbigh Boulevard Bridge Replacement Project, construction of a new eastbound span of the Denbigh Boulevard bridge is underway. Once the eastbound span is complete, the two lanes of traffic will be shifted to the newly constructed eastbound side of the bridge to allow for the demolition and construction of a new westbound span. The project is estimated to be complete in fall 2021.
