HAMPTON, Va. (March 3, 2020) – The Hampton University James T. George School of Business will host the 42nd Annual Conference on the Black Family on Wednesday, March 11 through Friday, March 13, 2020.

This year’s theme is “Creating a Lifetime of Wealth.” The conference will consist of a combination of powerful keynote speakers and life-changing workshops designed to influence financial literacy and wealth development in the black community. Participants will gain knowledge on how they can create a financial legacy for future generations. The conference will also celebrate the James T. George family as the 42nd Honored Black Family.

“I am pleased that the James T. George School of Business is hosting the 42nd Annual Conference of the Black Family, with the theme of Creating a Lifetime of Wealth. It couldn’t be more timely. One of the largest problems in today’s generation and economy is the lack of financial literacy. My parents taught me a valuable lesson at an early age, if you have a dollar, you can not spend a dollar twenty-five cents. It does not matter how worthwhile the project is,” said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey.

This year’s conference seeks to engage the campus and local communities on issues related to black families creating a lifetime of wealth. This three-day conference is designed to not only identify and understand the “salient” issues of wealth creation in the black community, it also focuses on appropriate responses to these issues.

“As a professor of Personal Finance, it is an honor and a privilege to lead this great effort. I commend our president, Dr. William R. Harvey, for having the vision to consistently address important issues of the black family,” said Dr. Sylvia Rose, Assistant Professor of Finance and Conference Chair. “We look forward to hosting the conference at our ‘Home by the Sea’ as we focus on issues that will propel our community to obtain sustained wealth.”

Hampton alumnus James T. George and his wife, Juliette, a retired Fairfax County secondary school teacher, will be recognized as the 2020 Honored Black Family. The George’s have been married for over 50 years and have two children and two grandchildren. James T. George founded MSTI, a small business, in 1990 after serving for 27 years as an active duty Army officer. Retiring as a Colonel, he served in a variety of infantry and comptroller positions both overseas and in the United States, including two tours in Vietnam and tours in Korea and Europe. As Assistant Comptroller of the Army for Financial Planning at the Pentagon, he led the development of the initial concept for an information system to integrate the Army’s programming and budgeting process. He concurrently served as a member of the board of directors of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) for three years while serving as comptroller of Fort Devens, MA and subsequently, while at the Pentagon. The Hampton University School of Business was named in his honor in April of 2019.

The opening keynote speaker will be Nicole P. Ross, Managing Director at Goldman Sachs. She is the region head of the Private Wealth Management business for the Mid-Atlantic region. She also leads the Private Wealth Management Sports & Entertainment Solutions offering at Goldman Sachs, which provides individuals from the sports and entertainment industry with wealth management advice.

The closing luncheon keynote speaker will be Christopher Bardell, Owner and Operator of 12 McDonald’s Restaurants. Conference workshop topics will include two tracks: Personal Finance and Building Wealth.
