| The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Heat Advisory for the City of Newport News from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. today. Heat index values up to 107 degrees are expected in our region. Thunderstorms are possible later today, as a low pressure system moves toward the area. There is a slight risk for severe weather, with damaging winds being the main threat. High temperatures and humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. Below are some tips to keep you safe during this extreme heat. Never leave people or pets in a closed car on a warm day.Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.If you’re outside, find shade. Wear a hat wide enough to protect your face.Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.Avoid high-energy activities or work outdoors, during midday heat, if possible.Check on family members, seniors, and neighbors.Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.Consider pet safety. If they are outside, make sure they have plenty of cool water and access to comfortable shade. Asphalt and dark pavement can be very hot to your pet’s feet. Those in need of relief are encouraged to go to one of the city’s library branches or community centers. The Four Oaks Day Services and Training Center at 7401 Warwick Boulevard is also open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. to serve the homeless community.
