Juneteenth Parade Is This Saturday Inaugural event has 75 registered units!

The City of Newport News, in collaboration with the Newport News Downtown Merchants and Neighbors Association, is set to present the inaugural Newport News Juneteenth Community Parade on Sat., June 11, in the Southeast Community. The parade will feature 75 parade units including marching bands, decorative floats and community groups all marching proudly to celebrate freedom.
The parade steps off at 10 a.m. at 33rd Street and Jefferson Avenue and continues southbound down Jefferson Avenue 1.5 miles; turns left onto 6th Street; then right into the parking lot of King-Lincoln Park where all units will disband. Following the parade, everyone is invited to stay at the park and enjoy food trucks and music from the Mosaic Steel Orchestra.
Spectators are encouraged to arrive early to avoid traffic congestion. The following city streets and interstate ramps may close as early as 9 a.m.:
- Jefferson Avenue from 33rd Street to 6th Street
- 25th Street overpass from City Hall will be closed, access only allowed to northbound or southbound 664
- Huntington Avenue at 28th Street eastbound will be closed, no access from Huntington Ave. to Jefferson Avenue via 28th Street Bridge
- Northbound I-664 Exit 6 closed to 25th Street, the 26th Street side of ramp shall remain open
- Southbound I-664 Exit 6 closed to 27th Street, the 26th Street side of ramp shall remain open
Street parking is available on all numbered streets on a first-come, first-served basis. If you park on the street, make sure you obey all posted signage and restrictions, and do not block any driveways or alleys. Please do not park in any private parking lots unless you have permission from the property owner. There will be no parking along the parade route and on some adjacent side streets beginning at 6 a.m. on the day of the parade. There will be signs in place to indicate the restrictions and violators may be towed at the owner’s expense.
