Luke’s Legacy
By: City of Newport News
One City Marathon is pleased to be partnering with Luke’s Legacy 501(c)(3) for the 2022 Maritime 5K as part of our mission to work with charitable non-profits whose missions align with ours. Luke was born in Newport News in 2004 to an Air Force family. He was an integral part of the track and cross-country team at Menchville High School, where he was known for commitment to team and speed on the track. In December 2020, after a courageous battle, Luke succumbed to a rare form of cancer at the age of 16. Luke participated in the inaugural Nautical Mile and also the Maritime 8K multiple times. At the 2020 Maritime 8K, he won first place in his age group! Luke’s Legacy was created to serve many purposes:
- Support to the Menchville High School Cross Country and Track team
- Provide two scholarships for the benefit of high school athletes living in Hampton Roads, Virginia
- Support pediatric cancer research and the research into rare cancers.
The One City Marathon is happy to showcase this great cause. Join us as we honor Luke‘s memory and his love of running. To learn more about Luke’s Legacy, please visit their Facebook Page.
