Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads to host Wounded Warrior 5K

Norfolk, VA – Local participants will honor the daily sacrifices made by the brave men, women and families of the Navy’s Wounded Warrior Program by running in the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Hampton Roads Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Wounded Warrior 5K on Nov. 17 at 11:30 a.m.

In 2008, then-Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, designated November as Warrior Care Month in order to inform members of the military and their families and communities about the programs and initiatives currently being provided through the Warrior Care system. During Warrior Care month, the Defense Department honors the courage of wounded, ill or injured service members, and highlights the programs that help them learn new life skills that enable them to return to duty or transition from the military.

“It is important for us to highlight what we offer Wounded Warriors and their families through the Navy’s Wounded Warrior Program,” said Andy Thomson, Interim MWR Director at NSA Hampton Roads. “We continue to find various ways to recognize the strength and resilience of our wounded, ill, and injured service members and are happy to be able to highlight that initiative this year with our in-person Wounded Warrior 5K.”

More than 190 people have pre-registered for the Wounded Warrior 5K, which will have participants run around the grounds of NSA Hampton Roads. The run is open to the military community with base access.
