| In 2020, the State Corporation Commission (SCC) announced a new area code would be added to the Hampton Roads region as phone numbers in the 757 area code are being exhausted. The new 948 area code will serve the same geographic region as the current 757 area code, and beginning April 9, 2022, Hampton Roads residents will have to use all 10 digits of the phone number (three-digit area code plus the seven-digit telephone number) to place a local call. To ease the transition from seven-digit to 10-digit dialing prior to assignment of the 948 area code, the SCC is encouraging Hampton Roads residents to start now dialing phone numbers using all 10 digits. Residents should also update their cell phone contacts, so that phone numbers they call regularly will already have the area code attached. Next spring, when new telephone lines and services begin being issued using the new 948 area code, current 757 phone numbers will not change and will remain 757 numbers.
