RISE Male Empowerment Network Mentors Needed

Program helps young men in Newport News Public Schools
Young men across our nation face unique challenges that threaten their dreams and futures. Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) created the RISE Male Empowerment Network to support and encourage male students. The program focuses on academic success, character development, college and career preparation, enrichment activities, leadership, mentorship and service. RISE is currently recruiting men over the age of 21 and organizations composed of males (ex: fraternities, civic organizations, businesses, and men’s ministries, youth leaders) to serve as mentors. Their goal is to provide positive male role models and engagement opportunities that improve the lives and outcomes for male youth in grades K-12 in Newport News. RISE mentors volunteer at least one hour a month to invest in Newport News youth. Mentors help the students in many ways, including serving as guest speakers, working with small groups or those in need of individual support, lending ideas and energy to clubs, helping students organize a new club, etc. Groups can adopt a school, lead and sponsor events or become engaged in another way. The primary goal is to serve as a regular presence in the lives of young men in the city. The power of just one nurturing adult can be the key to long-term life success. The benefits of mentoring include lower high school dropout rates, improved behavior, both at home and at school, enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence, better academic performance and regular attendance.  To get involved, men must be at least 21 years of age, successfully undergo a background check and attend orientation. Individuals can apply on the RISE Mentor Registration page; interested groups can submit an Organizational Interest Form via the RISE Registration page. For more information contact Bridget Adams at Bridget.Adams@nn.k12.va.us or call 757-283-7850, ext. 10318.
