Senator Kaine on Build Back Better Climate Change Bill

During a recent press conference, Senator Kaine joined the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and Climate power in order to rally for The Build Back Better Climate Change Bill. This bill provides much needed provisions to combat climate change, especially in the Hampton Roads region where the effects of climate change are especially prominent.
This bill will help to build renewable energy infrastructure, beginning with kickstarting one of the largest offshore wind developments in the United States. This development, launching in Virginia Beach will power 670,000 homes.
Kaine stated, “We’re each telling our own state’s story, and each of our state’s story is somewhat different, but there is a common problem and there is a common solution and that’s what the Build Back Better plan brings us in terms of climate action now.”
The Hampton Roads region, home to 1.8 million residents, is one of the areas most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. A report published in August 2021 regarding the impact climate change will have on Virginia’s coasts noted that Hampton Roads will experience more aggressive storms as an impact of climate change.

“This is not a tomorrow issue. It’s a today issue with impact on our quality of life and impact on our military readiness in the center of Naval power. Virginia is also happy to be part of the solution,” continued Senator Kaine.

“Congress now has to do our part and our part is passing this far-reaching climate provisions in Build Back Better so that we can accelerate this powerful economic engine, enable states like Virginia to rocket ahead on offshore wind and the other innovations that my colleagues’ states are known for, and do it in a way that will both employ the next generations of Americans and have America play the leadership role we need to play in battling climate change,” Kaine concluded.
