Share your views on the city budget: How much to cut taxes, how much to invest

By: City of Hampton

March 10, 2022 – What are your priorities for Hampton? City Manager Mary Bunting will recommend a tax rate cut for Fiscal Year 2023, balancing that reduction with priorities for new initiatives. Residents are being asked to give their views, with online polling.

Every year, Bunting asks Hampton residents to give their views on the city spending before she builds her proposed budget for City Council. This “I Value” effort started 11 years ago as a way to prioritize budget cuts during the recession and the slow recovery. Bunting had promised to seek public input on new spending priorities whenever that became possible. This year, the city’s potential revenues — mostly in property values — have rebounded, with large value increases in many cases.

The central question for this year’s “I Value” is: How much of the increase should be returned to taxpayers via a lower tax rate and how much should be used for investments in the city? The input will be considered for Fiscal Year 2023, which begins July 1.
