Summertime: SAFETY FIRST, then FUN!

This summer, protect yourself from the effects of extreme heat, and

To prevent heat-related illness:

  • Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as possible.
  • Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages and increase fluid intake, regardless of activity level. If you have fluid intake restrictions, consult with your doctor for how much fluid you should drink in the summer.
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Schedule outdoor activities carefully.
  • Pace yourself.
  • Take cool showers or baths to cool down.
  • Check on a friend or neighbor, especially the elderly. Social isolation is one of the main risk factors for heat-related illness and death.
  • Do not leave children or pets in cars.

Know the Signs and Symptoms

Listen to your body. Signs of heat exhaustion include: heavy sweating, weakness, headache, dizziness, cold and clammy skin, fast or weak pulse, cramping, nausea, vomiting, fainting.  Always seek appropriate medical attention as necessary and for medical emergencies, call 911. Pokey Smokey II at Portsmouth City Park

All aboard!  Ride the Pokey Smokey at Portsmouth City Park between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Tickets are $2 each.  Children under 3 are free.  The address for City Park is Cpl J M Williams Avenue. 

The Portsmouth Splash Park is Open!

The Portsmouth Splash Park is now open for family fun, Tuesday through Sunday, from 1 p.m. – 7 p.m.  Please note- the Splash Park will be closed on Sunday, July 4th. The Splash Park is free and is located at 900 Elm Avenue.
