Winter Weather Advisories in Effect for Snow and Wind

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow from midnight tonight until 9 a.m. Thursday morning, January 28th; and, a Wind Advisory from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday. According to the NWS, rain will begin this evening, changing to a wintery mix after midnight before changing over to snow in the early morning hours. Snow accumulation is estimated at around one inch for our area. Snow is expected to accumulate mostly on grassy surfaces and will likely impact roadways, especially bridges and overpasses in the morning hours.  Drivers should use caution and anticipate slippery road conditions during the morning commute.

Strong, gusty winds and wind chills are forecast for Thursday with winds gusting to 35-40 mph into the evening hours. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 30’s to low 40’s with wind chills into the low 30’s and upper 20’s throughout the day on Thursday.

The City of Portsmouth’s Department of Public Works has the snow removal equipment prepared and ready and snow detail crews will begin reporting overnight to monitor/respond to possible road conditions of the overpasses and bridges. Residents are reminded to maintain situational awareness and to stay informed.  Should the City of Portsmouth have weather-related announcements for the public, please see the Ways to Stay Informed below.
